As I mentioned yesterday, it was a weekend of highs & lows. On Friday, we had to put Lucy down. We're crushed with the loss of such a perfect dog.
She got very sick three weeks ago and we finally got a diagnosis from the vet of an "immune system disorder". We began some medication to try and raise her platelet levels. Last Wednesday, it was clear that something was really wrong. She wouldn't get up and finally stopped eating on Friday. After the vet took another blood sample, we found out her red blood cell count was dangerously low. Something from within was attacking her. She had lost 15% of her body weight.
With very few options left, we decided to make the tough decision and put an end to her suffering.
Tanya & I got Lucy in February of 2000. She was our "little kid" until Megan came on the scene. Then Lucy fell into the "family dog" role and was simply the best. Her sweet personality and gentleness made her a joy to be around. Her companionship around the house was more of a blessing than we realized.
Megan & Zoe are doing well. They are happy that Lucy is in heaven. Megan has told us that she knows Lucy is flying right now.
So the high of a great marathon on Sunday was tempered with the loss of a friend on Friday and the fabric of our family has a spot ripped out. We miss her a ton and wish we could have her back. Nine years just wasn't enough time with such a loyal and loving dog.
That's incredibly sad. I am so sorry.
ReplyDeleteOh guys, I'm so sorry! Even during the short time we stayed with you this past summer, I experienced how truly special Lucy was! Try to take comfort in knowing that her suffering is over and that she has reunited with her old pal Bonnie. Take care and know we're thinking of you!
ReplyDeleteLucy WAS a great dog! So sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteHere I am crying for the third time over lucy - we had spent alot of time together, mainly she licking my legs or looking up at me with those big brown eyes as i would sneak her little treats.
ReplyDeleteOne of my best memories is when Zoe was about 9 months in Santa Barbara - still and sitting by her toys and Lucy walked through the room and without missing a step gave Zoe a big lick on the head, creating a cowlick that stayed for hours.
Your family and Lucy were lucky to have each other. Remember when she would sit on Bonnie's head?
I am so, so sorry.
