Big Waves Up North!

Big Waves Up North!
On Thursday, we left the South Shore and headed up North for two nights. During the winter months, the North Shore gets some pretty big surf. We weren't expecting 20-30 ft swells! It was awesome to watch.

After a quick visit to the Kilauea Lighthouse, we hiked down to "Secret Beach" for a lunch spot. We stayed there almost two hours watching the waves.

We stood in the water up to our knees, but even that was freaky with a super strong under current.

  1. We saw waves like that back in January. It's amazing, isn't it? We had crowds of people packed on the beach and the lifeguards would call out "for those of you on the shore, please hang on to small children as they will get swept out"

  2. It is so unpredictable. For 10 minutes I would stand in one spot with the water only coming up to my ankles. Out of nowhere a wave would crash and send me running up the beach because it would have been up to my hips! Scary for small kids indeed!
