Drive to see the Aspens

Drive to see the Aspens
On Saturday morning, we made the annual trek into the mountains to see the changing aspens. Nana was out visiting, so we all piled into the car and began our adventure of exploring a road we haven't traveled before. We went up to Evergreen and then took Squaw Valley Pass to the top of Echo Mountain and down the backside to Echo Lake Park.

This unknown route quickly became a favorite as we were treated to outstanding views and beautiful roads lined like the one above. I'm pretty sure we hit the aspens at their peak because I can't imagine them any brighter.

As we began our picnic at Echo Lake Park, we saw some ominous clouds overhead. Sure enough, within minutes it started to SNOW! Balls of snow came raining down on us. Fortunately there was a shelter, so we shuffled underneath and continued our lunch. It wasn't that cold (53 degrees), but when you decide to hang out at 10,600 feet, pretty much anything can happen.

  3. I thought you were having fun when you covered your eyes and leaned in towards the center of the car!

  4. Beautiful pic! We were talking about going for a drive to see the trees this weekend. Perhaps we'll have to give your route a shot (especially after reading how pleasantly relaxing "Nana" describes the drive as being).

  5. That's was our plan for last Saturday too, but we ended up at the zoo instead. I just cannot fathom being in the car for that long with my kids. They start asking to get out before we even get to the grocery store!
