The Kalalau Trail is the granddaddy of all trails on Kauai. It starts at the top of the Na Pali Coast and hugs the coastline for 11 miles one way. No, we did not hike all 11 miles! On Friday, we hit the trail early and hiked about two miles down and then two miles inland.
The trail was a lot of up and down with switchbacks mixed in. Our $10 Walmart collapsible hiking poles were priceless as the trails was muddy and very slippery in spots.
This is not the trail to hike if you're looking to get away from people. It seemed like every tourist on the island was there. All with their brand new, bright white sneakers! Let's just say those white sneaks were not so white when they finished.
Today you get four pictures. Just keep clicking the picture to follow us to the prize at the end.

ReplyDeletei am REALLY enjoying your photo journal of the Kaui trip! Thanks for taking so many pictures. Having spent a lot of time on that island, it makes me really miss it! Your stories and photos make me feel like I'm right back there however -- I can even feel the cold water of the Napali Hanakapi'ai falls on my body, as you stand in the shade after that long hike and try to muster the courage to jump in... knowing you still have to hike all the way back out...
And the surf! Dang! When I was there in 95, Karl, Zeek and I caught Hanalei Bay with some epic 30' waves that fill my nightmares even tot his day. I remember sitting in the line-up watching monster mountains of water go by, and wondering what the heck I was thinking being out there. I caught ONE wave in 3 hours and will remember that ride for the rest of my life.
Thanks for the flashbacks! Amazing photos. Clearly an awesome trip you guys had, I can't wait to go back now.
Good stuff Steve! Thanks for the comment. All I can say is that you're CRAZY for surfing those waves. Great memory though!
